Company Overview

MagneMotion provides assembly automation, material handling, and transportation solutions based on our advanced electro-magnetic technology and controls. At the core of MagneMotion's products and services is a new generation of linear synchronous motor (LSM) technology that provides significantly higher performance than conventional transportation and factory automation systems. The company's success comes from a problem-solving approach and years of research focused on creating optimal solutions to address current and emerging market needs. MagneMotion has proven to be the front-runner in providing innovative and cost-effective linear motor solutions sought by industry leaders in the transportation and manufacturing sectors and by government agencies such as the DOT, DOE, DOD, and NASA.

Background

After a group of leading researchers at MIT led by Dr. Richard Thornton made a series of significant advances in LSM technology, it became evident that commercially viable solutions for a range of industrial and transportation applications could be developed. The result was the founding in 1996 of MagneMotion, Inc. For more than a decade MagneMotion’s team of engineers, software developers, and technicians have been advancing LSM technology and developing high-performance products to meet the ever-increasing requirements of our world-class customers.

Capabilities

MagneMotion holds patents and has special expertise in motor and magnet array design and fabrication; position sensing, communication, and control for linear synchronous motors; as well as propulsion, levitation, guidance and switching for maglev and wheel-based transport systems. MagneMotion's engineering team takes a needs-assessment and communicative approach to tailor solutions to industry-specific applications with the objective of streamlining productivity, increasing throughput, and improving efficiency for its customers, all while reducing the overall costs of operation. A unique differentiator in MagneMotion's technology offerings is our ability to provide transport system solutions of any length, speed, and thrust requirements, with no cables limiting the motion of the vehicle or moving frame.

Current Initiatives

Recent developments include an urban maglev (magnetic levitation) demonstration system in cooperation with the Federal Transit Administration, an LSM-based heavy payload transport elevator for the US Navy, and numerous material handling and assembly automation projects with Fortune 500 companies in the consumer goods, solar panel, semi-conductor, pharmaceutical, automotive, medical devices and mining industries, among others.

Products and Services

QuickStick™ LSM Systems

MagneMotion's QuickStick Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) propulsion and control system revolutionizes the assembly automation and material handling market as a faster, cleaner, and more advanced alternative to conventional linear motion methods or conveyor systems. With a scalable, adaptable, and innovative design, the QuickStick product line allows customers to achieve a comprehensive scope of acceleration and velocity profiles while moving a wide range of payloads – all with high precision and efficiency.

Compared to standard conveyor-based systems, the QuickStick solution has distinct advantages, which can improve production capacity of manufacturing process and assembly operations and in many instances eliminate the need for third-party systems to increase throughput. MagneMotion’s LSM Systems employ “long-stator” linear motor technology which is distinctly different from the short stroke linear motors that are prevalent in automation applications. With QuickStick modules, a system can be constructed of any length using linear motor powered track sections, configured in a wide range of layouts, propelling any number of vehicles. There are no cables restricting vehicle movement, allowing long, flexible track configuration options.

Companies seeking a high-throughput conveyor system will also benefit from the QuickStick LSM System’s optimized functionality and performance, resulting in an improved lean manufacturing process.

MagneMover Reference Designs

MagneMotion’s MagneMover Reference Designs are compatible with QuickStick LSM Systems, resulting in optimized solutions for track and vehicle designs that reduce system complexity. MagneMotion works with systems integrators, OEMs, or end users by handling the design and build process or by taking a consultative approach, addressing peak velocity and acceleration of vehicles, magnetic hold-down forces, and other issues unique to electro-magnetic systems. Its offering includes custom and reference designs that utilize different radius turns, double-bogie vehicles, turntables, electro-magnetic switching, and merge/diverge solutions.

Heavy Industrial LSM Systems

For material handling and transport of loads over 10,000 lbs, MagneMotion offers heavy-duty LSM-based solutions that are suitable for more demanding and harsh environments. Systems range from linear actuation for gantry systems, cargo load/unload systems, ore and bulk material transport systems, to commercial elevators and vertical lifts.

Maglev and LSM-based APMs

MagneMotion’s LSM technology is a key component in MagneMotion’s Maglev and wheel-based APM transportation solutions. The Company’s maglev design uses attractive magnetic forces for the suspension, guidance, and propulsion of vehicles on a guideway. The patented design is unique in that a single magnetic structure provides all the forces necessary for operation. For wheel-based vehicles, MagneMotion’s LSM technology provides a frictionless drive system that minimizes wear and features anti-collision software and emission-free propulsion.

Facilities

MagneMotion conducts engineering, research, development, manufacturing, and testing of LSM systems and maglev projects at its headquarters in Acton, MA. The facility houses our administrative offices, machine shop, engineering laboratory, and production floor, providing on-site concept-to-hardware capabilities. MagneMotion's engineers use the latest Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), magnetic design software, and computerized analytical tools.
